Review of Photosynthesis : Studies In Biology

An Informative Book on Everything about Photosynthesis

Oct 22, 2008 Ryan Gamble

Astute illustrations and in-depth explanations are presented in a very knowledgeable manner that will be valuable to all interested readers.

Photosynthesis is basically the synthesis of compounds with the aid of radiant energy. Happening mostly in plants, they use sunlight to create energy that helps them to grow on a cellular level. This sets up photosynthesis as being essential to all forms of life on earth. That is because the plants absorb the energy, which in turn are eaten by nearly everything, and are transmitted the energy through the digestion. Since animals cannot "capture" sunlight on their own, they rely on plants to do it for them. This text helps to describe all of the important aspects of photosynthesis, it stresses why it is such an important process, and it provides a learning environment about plants and what goes into growing them correctly

Qualifications of the Text

Photosynthesis can be boiled down to understandable definitions where we can say it "is the process by which plants grow." But, learning why photosynthesis occurs, what the triggers are for it, and exactly why it works are a different story all together. That is where this text comes into play for students of plant pathology and people interested in the field. Published by Cambridge University Press, the 214 page text was written by authors David Hall (A former Professor of Biology) and Krishna Rao. It is designed to be an in-depth account of the process of photosynthesis, and all of the specifics that go into it taking place. This is the revised 6th Edition of the book, which speaks to its popularity.

The text is split up into 9 chapters, an appendix, and an index that help to show the many steps of photosynthesis, and to provide discussions to go with pictures that depict what is taking place at the different stages.

Table of Contents:

1. Importance and Role of Photosynthesis

2. History and Progress of Ideas

3. Photosynthetic Apparatus

4. Light Absorption and the Two Photosystems

5. Photosynthetic Electron Transport and Phosphorylation

6. Carbon Dioxide Fixation

7. Bacterial Photosynthesis

8. Research in Photosynthesis

9. Laboratory Experiments

Sectional Debriefing of the Text

All of the sections of the text serve an important function to explain some form of the photosynthetic approach to what goes on inside plants. There is a brief chapter on the history and progress of the ideas involved in the study before it dives into exactly how and why photosynthesis takes place all around us. There are different aspects of photosynthesis that you must understand if you are going to become an expert on the topic, and the text does a great job of slowing down the ideas being presented so that they are understood well far before the next section is reached. Research is depicted within the text, and laboratory experiments that have been done to explain specific processes are included in the text as well. This is a great chapter if you are trying to figure out just how people reached the conclusions they have about what takes place within a plant.

Final Thoughts on Photosynthesis : Studies In Biology

With basic definitions and explanations of everything to do with photosynthesis, this text is a great learning tool for someone just getting into the field of plants. On the flip side of that, there are many charts, chemical composite breakdowns, and extensive elaborations upon the subject to make this text also useful for an expert in the field. There is basically something for everyone that wants to learn a little more about photosynthesis as a study within Biological entities. The biggest thing that the book has to offer are its highlights of how important photosynthesis is to the food production of our country. With great explanations, in-depth break-downs of the difficult information, and illustrations to better picture what is going on during the stages of photosynthesis, I think that the text does a great job of teaching anything you would ever want to know about photosynthesis.
