How to Build a Positive Body Image

Tips on Boosting Confidence in Your Physical Self.

Here are some activities that will help you appreciate your figure, just by concentrating on what you already have.

It is not unusual to feel unappreciative or unhappy about your body image. This can happen from time to time or sometimes can be a chronic episode that will lead to depression. There are ways to appreciate your physical self just by attentively tuning mentally - you will realise that you are able to control the way you feel about your body.

Connect Physically and Mentally through Exercise

Exercising is essential for both physical and mental wellness. Your body detoxifies and tension is released from your mind. By engaging in exercises that allow you to appreciate your body, you will find that you will feel healthier and more confident about the way you look. These types of activities include pilates, where a great deal of concentration is required to gel with physical movements; dancing, which allows music to promote moods in accordance to moves; and swimming, where the lightness of your body and the contact with water will help you engage with nature.

Revisit the Family Tree

Your physical make-up comes from your genes. You environment may alter the way you look through the food you consume and the amount of exercise you engage in. By revisiting your family tree, take a look at pictures of women from both your mother and father's side. You will be able to appreciate your body through images of those who are related to you. Additionally, you will begin to realise that the way you look "is not your fault." Try to understand the set of genes that define you and work from there to improve your physical well-being - through a healthy diet and exercise.

Be Attentive to your Health

Always stick to your medical check-ups, especially the general wellness check up that usually takes place annually. Not only will you be in the loop of what your body is going through, you will feel better when you know that you are responsibly taking care of your physical health. For example, it is important to take a pap smear once a year, even though not many women are thrilled about gynaecological visits! However, pap smears are the first detectors of cervical cancer, which is one of the top killers amongst women. By taking your pap smear annually, you will either know that you are clear of cancer or find an early detection. This can potentially save your life.

Concentrate on your Strengths

It is said that your mind essentially controls the way you feel about yourself. Always keep a positive outlook on life with every "failure" a stepping stone to learning something new. Concentrating on your intellectual strengths takes the pressure off judging yourself for what your body looks like. By understanding that you have strengths and weaknesses like everyone else, you will realise that your body too is just as special and unique as the next woman's body. By capitalising on your abilities and interests, you will soon appreciate the more attractive features of your appearances. It may be your eyes, your lips, your arms, your hips or even your toes. Believe in whatever makes you feel attractive and you will find that you will judge yourself a whole lot less.
