Maintaining an effective self-care program doesn't have to feel like work. There are many creative ways to make self-care something to look forward to.

Committing to following a balanced self-care program can feel overwhelming at first. Some creativity and a bit of imagination can turn what might seem like a monumental life change into an exciting ongoing project. Here are some simple and inspiring ideas to start off with.

Create a Self-Care Box

Find a shoe box or something similar and fill it with small items that are mood elevating. Aromatherapy oils, inspirational quotes, letters from loved ones and pictures are some ideas. The box can even be decorated as part of the process.

Start a Self-Care Journal

Find a special notebook and use it to record any thoughts, ideas, dreams or inspirations that create a sense of serenity. Some people find that the act of writing can be an enriching experience in itself. The journal can also be used to map out plans for other self-care project ideas.

Make a Self-Care Collage

Use magazines, newspapers, old letters, pictures or any other kind of medium. Cut the items down to size and glue them randomly onto a large heavy paper (like bristol board or cardstock). Post the paper someplace where it will be seen during a low emotional time and use it to improve mood.

Design a Self-Care Jar

Preserve jars or small cleansed pasta jars work well for this. Decorate the jar with acrylic paints or other craft materials. Fill the jar with strips of paper containing inspirational quotes or with other small items of interest. Poke around in it when feeling melancholy and add to it as needed.

Create an Inspiration Book

Similar to the collage, this can require some cutting and pasting. Use a sketchpad or a blank mini book like the ones used for altered book projects. Cut, paste and write things in the book that are uplifting and humorous. One can even record personal stories of inspiration if the notebook is large enough.

Gather Lyrics for Every Mood

Music lovers will find this particularly inspiring. Simply gather lyrics from songs that are positive, bring back happy memories or contain a theme of perseverance. Place them together in a binder or a file folder and read through them whenever the mood strikes.

Compile a Playlist for Every Mood

Also for music lovers, this requires the use of a computer with a media player as well as a collection of mp3 music files. Drag and drop music files that suit a particular mood into the 'untitled playlist' frame and save the collection as a playlist named by the mood it represents. When needing a lift pick the playlist of choice for some instant pleasure.

Design Self-Care Cards

Index cards or cardstock cut into 3 x 5 rectangles are the best to use for this project. On one side of each card write something inspirational or uplifting and decorate the other side with altered art items or collage materials. When feeling the need, pick a completed card (without looking at it first) and then read and reflect on its message.

Creating and maintaining a self-care plan can be an exciting and creative adventure. Special talents are not required and the projects do not need to be completed in one sitting. In fact, sometimes the act of creating can be enough to raise spirits. All that is needed is some imagination, a few household supplies and a large dose of imagination.
