Cellulite causes dimpling of the skin. It can happen to men and women. It occurs after puberty, and is descriptively referred to as cottage cheese skin.

Women suffer more than men do. The tissue that supports fat cells (connective tissue) is stiffer in women, when compared to men. Expansion of fat cells with weight gain causes them to bulge through the tissue, making the cells noticeable. It’s what gives us that lumpy look. It’s not fat that causes cellulite. The connective tissue gives way. In turn, fat cells become visible. The thighs are most commonly affected. Other areas commonly affected are the hips, buttocks, and abdomen.

Getting rid of Cellulite

You can’t really get rid of cellulite, but there are measures you can take to minimize the appearance. Heredity and estrogen cause cellulite. Hormonal influences in men can sometimes make cellulite appear. It’s much less common in men than in women. When it does appear in men, a physical exam from the doctor should rule out underlying hormone problems.

Most women do have some degree of cellulite, but it worsens in appearance with lack of exercise and weight gain. Skin thickness, body fat distribution, and age determine just how visible cellulite is.

Misconceptions

  • Thin women don't have cellulite – Actually, that's not true at all. Cellulite is common. You've seen the super-model photos that prove it.
  • Cellulite can go away – Honestly, there is no cure. Creams containing soy, grape-seed, sweet clover, and gingko biloba, claim to reduce cellulite, but claims are not backed by research.

Take Action

The effects of cellulite can diminish self-esteem, but there’s no reason. Available treatments can temporarily give your skin a new look. Anything that pushes the fat cells deeper into tissue will make you look better. You really can manage the appearance of cellulite without costly treatments. Measures taken to combat cellulite are also going to benefit your overall health.

  • If you smoke, you should stop. Not only will it reduce wrinkles and bring a new glow to your skin, but smoking is also thought to contribute to cellulite. Collagen is a connective tissue, and smoking destroys collagen.
  • Exercise plumps up the skin, keeping connective tissue strong and minimizing fluid collection. Start early in life. Keep your legs strong with strength training and cardio-fitness. Drink plenty of water to eliminate toxins.
  • Tanning creams can make cellulite less noticeable.
  • Rather than spend money at a spa, ask your partner for a massage. It’s less costly and a lot more fun. Try a massage roller to increase blood flow, and help remove toxins. A professional massage is very beneficial, but don’t make cellulite treatment the primary goal when choosing a massage therapist.
  • Immediate results can be seen with massage, and even one session of exercise. Weight loss should take time. Stick with your goals.
  • Eat your fruits and vegetables. Never underestimate the power of whole foods for overall health. Essential vitamins and minerals can only be obtained through food synergy. You won’t get it from a pill. Vitamin E, olive oil, fish oil and other antioxidants from food simply keep our skin youthful.

Above all, remember – cellulite is normal. Try some camouflage. Keep your body strong. Smooth vibrant skin comes from regular exercise and good eating habits. You’ll find that cellulite is less noticeable when you make an effort to beat it. You’ll feel better, and experience years of good health in the process.
